Mauritius’ insurance major Swan Group handed out checks of a total value of Rs 1.70 million to six non-governmental organisations (NGOs) which work towards youth development.

This cheque presentation, which took place at the Swan Group Centre in Port Louis two days ago, was in line with the occasion of the International Youth Day which is celebrated globally on August 12, 2014.

Louis Rivalland, Group Chief Executive of Swan Group, highlighted the importance of the NGOs’ work and stressed that private enterprises must extend their support so that the Mauritian youth, especially those coming from less privileged backgrounds, can get the opportunity to succeed in life.

The six NGOs work in the sectors of education, art and sport: Terrain for Interactive Pedagogy through Arts (TIPA); Association de parents d’enfants inadaptés de Maurice (APEIM); Communauté du Chemin Neuf, Association Quartier de Lumière; Junior Achievement Mascareignes; and Trust Fund for Excellence in Sport.

“Our company’s first thought is on how we can provide a secure future to the coming generation. This International Youth Day provides an ideal opportunity for us to extend financial support to these NGOs that put in on-the-ground efforts night and day so that our youth can enjoy a better future,” Louis Rivalland declared.

It may be noted that in the education and training sector, TIPA promotes an interactive pedagogy and an education through art and culture, which favours youth development.

Communauté du Chemin Neuf works for the promotion of family, social and professional values within young people for a better future.

Association Quartier de Lumière works for towards child development and self-sufficiency, while APEIM takes charge of children and adults of an average or deep mental handicap, with or without associated handicaps.
