The strong cultural, economic and bilateral ties between Mauritius and mainland Africa were exhorted by the Financial Services Commission of Mauritius on the occasion of the International Africa Day.
“Mauritius holds the African continent in high esteem, and, on this occasion, we wish to reiterate the commitment of the FSC to contribute further towards reinforcing Mauritius’ partnership with Africa,” said FSC CEO Clairette Ah-Hen.
Mauritius’ premier non-financial services regulator, the FSC, celebrated the International Africa Day on May 23, 2014 at the FSC House, in the presence of board member Rajeshsharma Ramloll, CEO Clairette Ah-Hen and the FSC staff.
Additionally, representatives of African embassies and consulates, expatriates from the African continent who work in the financial services industry in Ebène, including FSC licensees whose major client base is in Africa, as well as expatriate students from other African countries who are currently studying Finance at Masters level at the University of Mauritius were also invited.
The function was officially declared open with the National Anthem of Mauritius and of the African Union, followed by presentations and testimonies from African students on their countries covering Congo Brazaville, Eritrea, Nigeria, Lesotho, Sierra Leone and Zambia.
Marie Agnes Sanon of the African Reinsurance Corporation heaped praise upon the FSC “for this laudable initiative which the African community has really appreciated.”
This event, according to her, serves to contribute towards adding a greater dimension to the celebration of the International Africa Day.
The FSC Mauritius is an integral part of the African continent. As such, it plays a vital role in policy making through its active membership and participation in a number of regional organisations.
FSC is a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Committee for Insurance, Securities and Non-Bank Authorities (CISNA), the International Organisation of Securities Commission (IOSCO), Africa Middle East Regional Committee (AMERC) and the Financial Stability Board’s Regional Consultative Group (FSB-RCG) for Sub-Saharan Africa, among others.
