“With the opening of the new Ophthalmology Department at the Souillac hospital, the workload at the Subramania Bharati Eye Hospital in Moka will decrease by 30 to 35%.” The statement was made by the Minister of Health and Quality of Life, Anil Gayan, at the launching of the new Ophthalmology services.

Four patients have already undergone successful eye surgery at the new unit, said the Minister. The new unit at Souillac will initially provide outpatient services, cataract and minor eye surgeries, and will serve patients living in the southern region.

Since the Subramania Bharati Eye Hospital was converted into a full-fledged eye hospital in 1972, all eye surgeries have been carried out in that same set-up, despite an increase in demand for eye medical services.

“As per latest figures available, yearly, over 200,000 patients attend the eye hospital in Moka, leading to overcrowding and a long waiting time for surgery,” Anil Gayan explained.

The number of patients awaiting cataract surgery stands at around 1,750 while the waiting time is about 11 weeks.

Highlighting the commitment of the staff of the health sector to do their utmost to satisfy the needs and requirements of patients, the Minister urged “patients to be patient”.

“We will strive to minimise the waiting time in the public sector but we will not be able to eliminate it altogether,” he pointed out.

The launching was held on January 8, 2015.
