The island economy has once again received a pat on the back from an acclaimed international body, with the Mauritius Business Growth Scheme (MBGS) being viewed as an ideal model by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Not only that, the MBGS model is also being actively studied for its application in other countries, starting with the Middle East.

Accordingly, Isaiah Oliver, Senior Business Development Director, Chemonics International, is visiting Mauritius until February 1, 2014 to analyse the MBGS’s impact, its viability, the administration and the main factors responsible for its success.

The MBGS unit, which became operational in March 2011, was set up for businessmen with the objective of providing direct assistance and supporting any commercial activity contributing to the Mauritian economy. It has a team comprising international business experts with global experience as well as advisors with detailed knowledge of the Mauritian private sector and significant experience in business and mentoring.

Isaiah Oliver is an economist who specialises in organisational development and has spearheaded several projects for the implementation of development programs in the private sector. Besides, he has acted as Project Manager of several programs of economic growth, such as Competitive Enterprise Development Programme of the USAID in Albania.

Ustad Furniture, Polytol Paints and Adhesive, English Bay, Marble and Stones, Expand Technologies Ltd, Tamak Textile Ltd, Rose-Hill Transport Holding Ltd and Intotex Ltd are some companies which benefited from MBGS’s expertise.

Isaiah Olivier will have the opportunity to visit these companies and moreover, the data collected from field visits to companies will be supplemented by information from the MBGS itself.

The purpose of both primary and secondary data collection will be to gain knowledge on methods of loan processing and operations of MBSG, characteristics of Mauritius contributing to the success of this scheme or preventing it from optimizing its impact, as well as other potential domains of mutual cooperation between the USAID and Mauritius.

An important objective of USAID is to develop partnerships with countries committed to enabling the private sector investment that is the basis of sustained economic growth to open new markets for American goods, promote trade overseas, and create jobs.
