Mauritius’ tertiary education sector must inculcate a deeper culture of research over the long run, according to Raghunath Shevgaonkar, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, which is one of India’s premier engineering institutes.
“We should also use Mauritius as a platform to reach out to African students and in the years to come, as an educational hub for high cutting-edge research and high-quality education,” he stated.
Visiting Mauritius for the inauguration of the International Institute of Technology Research Academy (IITRA), Professor Shevgaonkar paid a courtesy call yesterday on Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, at the Treasury Building in Port Louis.
The institute inauguration took place yesterday, July 23, 2014 at the University Campus in Bel Air, Flacq.
During the meeting, Shevgaonkar recalled the agreement signed on November 19 2013 for setting up an Indian Institute of Technology Research Academy in Mauritius between the Mauritius Research Council and IIT Delhi.
“The meeting with the Prime Minister was excellent, I have apprised the Prime Minister of the progress achieved and he was very happy that things are moving well,” Shevgaonkar said.
He concluded on the note that the International Institute of Technology Research Academy, where the primary focus will be on cutting-edge research, will be greatly beneficial to Mauritius.

The Indian Institutes of Technology are institutions of national importance established under an Act of Parliament for fostering excellence in education. Currently, India boasts 15 such institutions across the length and breadth of the country.
Over the years, the IITs have created world class educational platforms dynamically sustained through internationally recognized research based on excellent infrastructural facilities.
For his part, ProfessorShevgaonkar has been an active researcher in areas such as optical communication, image processing, antennas, microwaves, radio astronomy among many others.
He has published more than 150 papers in international journals and conferences, and two books namely Electromagnetic Waves and Transmission lines for Electrical Engineers, whereas his video and web lectures on Electromagnetics and Fiber optic communication are used worldwide through YouTube.
