The latest published figures from Statistics Mauritius reveal that a total of 308,980 tourists came to Mauritius in 2020. Out of this total, 304,842 tourists were recorded for the period January to March 2020, representing 98.7%. The industry remains in difficulty although local tourism has been an avenue for many operators, especially during the festive period of December last.

The optimism towards wide- spread vaccination has subsided, largely because of the impact of the variant COVID-19 in many countries, including the UK, which remains in lock down. These have dampened the outlook for the industry locally, as it is expected that caution will be maintained with respect to re-opening of borders. While the economy continues to suffer from the effects of the pandemic, the Government initiatives such as the wage assistance scheme have so far maintained employment in the sector.
