Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam met Annick Girardin, Secretary of State for Development and Francophony on Wednesday, 18 June 14, to discuss the next Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will be held in July in Comoros.
Girardin, who is a member of the National Assemblée of France, noted that discussions focused on the next Summit of Heads of State and Government in Comoros, visit of French President François Hollande at the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and the support of the Agence française de Développement in Mauritius, amongst others.
Finally, during her stay, which lasted for two days, Girardin meet members of the Government as well as the General Secretary of the IOC, Jean Claude de l’Estrac.
On the same day, the Prime Minister also met Alan Jardine, Head of School of Medicine, University of Glasgow, at the Treasury Building, Port-Louis.
Professor Alan Jardine has come to Mauritius as the external examiner of first year undergraduate medical students, in collaboration with University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine at the University of Mauritius (UoM).
“The purpose of my visit is to ensure that the quality and standard of the new Medical Degree course set up at the University of Mauritius is appropriate,” he said.
Taking advantage of his visit, he paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Romeela Mohee, and the Pro-Vice Chancellor Academia, A. Hussein Subratty, at the University of Mauritius.
Prof Jardine also met the Dean of Faculty of Science, Satish Ramchurn, and the Head of Department of Medicine, Marie France Lan Cheong Wah, at the UoM.
Alan Jardine is a Clinical Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of Glasgow and Honorary Consultant in Medicine and Nephrology at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow.
He leads the Renal Research Group at the University of Glasgow, with ongoing research ranging from laboratory based studies on cardiac and vascular function, to international, multicentre trials.
His involvement in the Medical Degree course at the University of Mauritius can be expected to be of significant assistance in developing the course, and building the reputation of Mauritius as a higher education hub for Africa.
