Evidencing the rising focus of the island economy on entrepreneurship, a training was held from May 14 to May 21, 2014 to impart key entrepreneurial competencies and behavioral skills to those hailing from small and medium enterprises.

Mauritius Business Minister Jangbahadoorsing Seetaram handed over the course completion certificates to the 19 small and medium entrepreneurs that have successfully followed the entrepreneurship training workshop (ETW).

“The workshop is designed for business people or aspiring entrepreneurs, with the central idea being that there are competencies and behaviour patterns leading to success that can be taught,” said Minister Seetaram in his opening address.

According to him, the ETW programme is different from other programmes in the sense that the Empretec methodology used during the training is based on the concept of entrepreneurship from a psychological point of view and a behavioural approach to entrepreneurship.

“The research undertaken demonstrates that there are a series of key entrepreneurial competencies and behaviour patterns associated with successful entrepreneurs. These can be strengthened in individuals by appropriate exposure and training. That is achieved, however, not by lecturing theories but rather through learning by doing and personal, self-transformation of entrepreneurs,” he said.

Additionally, he spoke about the major behaviour patterns that are transformed during the ETW namely opportunity seeking and initiative, persistence, fulfilling commitments, demand for efficiency and quality, taking calculated risks, goal setting, information seeking, systematic planning and monitoring, persuasion and networking, as well as independence and self-confidence.

Organized jointly by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) at Coromandel, and Empretec Mauritius, the workshop is being heralded as one of the best trainings in entrepreneurship across two decades.

The workshop is an integrated entrepreneurial capacity-building programme that provides entrepreneurship training and technical assistance for small and medium enterprise development. It promotes entrepreneurship; fosters individual entrepreneurial capabilities; builds institutional capacity at the country level; and encourages employment-creating investment and linkages both among SMEs as well as between large and small enterprises.

During the training, participants, also known as Empretecos, had the opportunity to lab test their personal entrepreneurial skills.

Moreover, this intensive entrepreneurship training programme, geared towards helping entrepreneurs to put their ideas into action, brings an attitudinal change and aids entrepreneurs in building their personal entrepreneurial skills.

The ETW is an internationally acclaimed workshop developed through intensive research by the Harvard University and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

It is based on a behavioural methodology to strengthen the 10 key entrepreneurial competencies that influence the way entrepreneurs manage and run their businesses.
