Mauritius banks on its education sector as an important pillar for the island economy and is looking for greater cooperation from the Indian government, especially for training teachers for the Mauritian primary, secondary and higher education level.
Evidencing the importance of the education sector, in the latest budget for 2014, the Finance minister announced that Rs 14.8 billion have been allocated to the sector, which represents an increase of 11.2% over the amount spent in 2013.
As Mauritius is one of the countries which benefit from technical and economic support from the India-Africa Forum Summit programmes, India plays an important role in its economic development and capacity building. Hence, the relations between the two countries are expected to take a turn for the better as India provides more support in education and capacity building.
According to the Minister of Education in Mauritius, Vasant Kumar Bunwaree, India can evidence its support in the development of Mauritius’ education sector by training private firms and individuals in the provision of education.
The latter said talks are on between the two countries on how India can help boost Mauritius education and capacity building sectors. He also said that the development of the education sector is given a lot of importance in Mauritius and India’s support at different levels is welcomed.
Getting access to trained teachers and other technical support from India will help Mauritius to raise standards of education in the Indian Ocean, he noted. The minister added that the two countries are talking at an official level and there are agreements which have already been signed to increase cooperation in the education sector.
Meanwhile, during the visit of Indian Human Resource Development Minister Pallam Raju to Mauritius last November, two memorandums of understanding between the Association of Indian Universities and Mauritius’ Tertiary Education Commission were signed to boost cooperation in higher education.
