Mauritius’ Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) is going all out in the New Year to boost human resource development by leveraging its training and workforce development programmes.

For 2014, HRDC has established a programme of work with targeted goals and actions, amongst which ‘Let’s Talk Careers’ is a major initiative.

The new project is expected to contribute towards improving career awareness and employability of university students through evidence-based career talks by industry representatives.

Industry resource persons would be invited to interact with students over real career perspectives and requirements from different industrial spheres. The aim is to clarify any misconceptions that students may have in terms of career aspirations, expectations, personal career goals and rewards.

The second major project of the HRDC for 2014 is the Career Development Stairway which seeks to reduce skills mismatch through development and provision of relevant training offered by training centres.

In the initial phase, the project will focus on various job roles and career opportunities in the leading sectors of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and finance.

The Career Development Stairway will assist not only new entrants but also those looking for further opportunities, in planning a career in these booming sectors in the island economy.

The Career Development Stairway comprises a series of approved job profiles covering most of the jobs found in the sector. These job profiles will be arrived at basis the skills that are required by employers for filling in a particular role.

With these new initiatives, as well as ongoing projects such as work placement programme for Lower VI students during their vacations and the ‘Let’s Talk HR’ series, comprising talks by experts on best practices in HR, the HRDC looks set to give a boost to career development in Mauritius.

Besides, private sector initiatives, such as a career fair by the Mauritian branch of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), are likely to help students in Mauritius decide their way forward on the job front. The career fair is slated for 23-25 January at Ebene and targets those interested in a career in accounting and finance.
