Interested in the role of Mauritius in the development of the continent, Africa-centered television channel, CNBC Africa, interviewed key industry figures in the island economy on the investment development model applied in the country.
The channel spoke to an impressive trio comprising Enterprise Mauritius chairman Amédée Darga, Abax Services CEO Richard Arlove and Joint Economic Council President Ahmed Parkar, who is also the Managing Director of Star Knitwear.
The television debate of 52 minutes, which took place at the premises of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) last week, was sponsored by Mauritius-based conglomerate GML and its subsidiary, financial services major Afrasia Bank, and moderated by Godfrey Mutizwa, an African journalist.
For Amédée Darga, the television programme to be broadcast on CNBC Africa is a major opportunity for Mauritius, as it will reach a large number of viewers across 48 African countries.
“The television debate of CNBC Africa on Mauritius, which forms part of our communication strategy vis-à-vis the economic players in Africa, is excellent publicity for Mauritius,” Amedee Darga said.
“These communications strategies have already been used to great advantage by some companies in Mauritius, such as the Board of Investment, Enterprise Mauritius and the various ministries of the government of Mauritius,” he stated.
For his part, Ahmed Parkar placed great emphasis on the increasing penetration of Mauritian companies in Africa.
Finally, Richard Arlove recognized the efforts of the government of Mauritius to improve the investment climate, in order to encourage investments.
“The government has put in a conducive framework to increase our participation in the growth of Africa and Mauritius has all the resources to contribute to the continents development,” he said.
“However, we need more ambassadors, economic partnerships, business networks as well as air and maritime connectivity to strengthen the links between Mauritius and the development in Africa,” he concluded.
