Several important bilateral and cooperation issues were at the fore of the 4th Political Consultation Mechanism Meeting between Mauritius and the Russian Federation held on August 28, 2014 in Port Louis.
The meeting, chaired by the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping and acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Anil Bachoo, was characterized by a will to consolidate existing cooperation ties between the two countries with enhanced opportunities in other areas of cooperation.
The Russian delegation was led by the Special Envoy of the President of the Russian Federation for the Middle East and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mikhail Bogdanov.
During the meeting discussions focused on international issues, the ocean economy, tourism, trade and investment, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Small Island Developing States (SIDS), education, sports, seafood, culture, technology transfer and capacity-building, amongst others.
Mauritius’ aim is actually to learn from the Russian experience in terms of the development that Russia has achieved as well as on the Russian expertise in industrial diversification initiatives and strategies for the creation of new economic pillars.
In regards to the ocean economy development, Mauritius is looking forward to creating a specific portfolio of funds for SIDS with multilateral schemes to support the development of its ocean economy.
Furthermore, the possibilities of encouraging a greater number of Russian tourists to visit Mauritius were raised during the meeting along with increasing the frequency of air connections between Mauritius and Russia resulting in higher passenger capacity.
It can be recalled that Russia has a tourist market of 42 million tourists with only 3,500 tourists visiting Mauritius.
As regards to the cultural sphere, the prospect of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between both countries was raised, as well as the creation in Mauritius of a science and cultural centre.
Finally, both sides concluded on how to enhance mutual cooperation pertaining to trade and investment and collaboration between BOI and its Russian counterpart.
